Layer Naming Best Practices

Overview

Using consistent layer names helps keep your drawings organized and makes it easier to locate layers in the AutoCAD Layer Manager.

Although AutoCAD allows many different naming conventions, certain layer names can cause layers to sort in unexpected locations within the layer list.

Recommended Naming Convention

Separate words with a hyphen (-) instead of a space.

Using hyphens creates consistent, easy-to-read layer names and improves alphabetical sorting.

Avoid Leading Spaces or Special Characters

Do not begin layer names with spaces or unnecessary special characters.

Leading spaces or characters such as underscores may cause layers to appear in unexpected positions within the Layer Manager, making them more difficult to locate.
